Tristan Young from BusinessCar has scrutinised mpg stats to find answers needed to run a cost and eco-efficient fleet, and the smart fortwo cdi beat off the opposition to gain No. 1 spot as the top City car.

Tristan commented:  "The smart fortwo diesel is a lesson in the basics of how to get good fuel figures - reduce weight and have a small, efficient engine.  It is also the perfect example of a car that's ahead of the curve when it comes to CO2 and the UK's tax system."

The only disadvantage mentioned in the article related to the smart only having two seats.  Tristan added:  "But then its official fuel consumption is 85.6 mpg, almost 10 mpg better than any other car on sale today."
